The Honey Pot

ah, this makes me feel better. Whenever I think of The Shining it is associated with tremendous guilt. One summer weekend a long time ago, I took my cousin on a trip to my grandmother’s house. We rented movies. He picked The Shining (neither of us had ever seen it before). Almost as soon as I hit play, I fell asleep. I NEVER fall asleep during a movie and I managed to fall asleep and abandoned my young cousin to endure The Shining, one of the scariest movies ever made, alone.

The next morning he told me that during one of the scariest parts he saw my grandmother’s silhouette drifting down the dark hallway. Silently and stealthily so as not to interrupt our movie viewing, I don’t know how he didn’t ‘shit twice and die’. He has never been the same since, puberty might have had something to do with it, but I think The Shining made him a man. So, when ever This American Life replays their episode ‘Fear of Sleep

Act Four. Hollywood-Induced Nightmare.

This American Life’s own Production Manager Seth Lind explains how he ended up watching Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining when he was six years old, and how it led to two years where every night he had trouble falling asleep and nightmares

I have to call my Cousin Patrick and apologize to him all over again. He laughs and says, “thanks”
