I just wanted to thank everyone for reaching out and being so effusive and nice about this last episode, “Boomerang.” The concept of the karmic boomerang is something that has long interested me and it was fun to play it out in various ways in the episode. If you haven’t seen it, it’s repeated constantly on Showtime this week, and on Showtime On Demand (plus, truthfully, it’s pretty easy to find illegally online — shhhhh…). I had a lot of fun writing and producing the episode, but honestly, with craftspeople and actors like these, it’s pretty easy for my words to look good.
As has been widely reported, this week we received a 7th season pick-up. It’s hard to keep a show going for a long time, and our creator/showrunner/executive producer Jenji Kohan has refused to go the easy route with the show, and I think it’s the smart, brave, and correct choice. Had the show stayed in Agrestic, no one would give a shit by this point. The show would have retained its core audience, shed some out of boredom, but would most likely anger few. The fact that so many bemoan losing Agrestic and Celia and “Little Boxes” (and pot, to some extent) and the other elements that made us fall in love with the show in the first place demonstrates the strength, originality, and clarity of vision Jenji (and Roberto Benabib) had, but I think it is the willingness to risk pissing people off, to keep moving and growing and trying new things, that is why people still watch, argue, debate, and ultimately why we and the hundreds of other people Weeds employs are going to have jobs next year… not to mention allowing for the existence of the other Showtime “Bad Moms” (Tara, Jackie, Big C).
Anyway, thanks again for watching, for the nice comments over the last couple years, and even the mean ones, because I’d much rather be on a show that risks alienating its audience than one that does the same thing week after week for fear of shaking things up too much. I don’t know, that doesn’t sound like it would be too much fun.
I watched Boomerang last night, so good!
