Day 3: A book you love

here’s a thing we haven’t talked about lately: Jennifer’s Goodreads rating system.

I don’t understand Jennifer’s rating system, but I do know that it ends up with the wrong ratings. last year Jennifer corrected her rating of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency to give it a well-deserved FIVE star rating as a birthday gift to me. I bet it felt pretty great to be correct for a little while! I certainly enjoyed knowing that one of my top three* books was getting the love it deserved.

however, Jennifer stubbornly refuses to give DGHDA its full stars on a regular basis. and YET! American Gods (which is a quite good book, but not as good as DGHDA) somehow is rated higher?! and it was with this realization that the Book Wars began, wherein I continually tell Jennifer she’s wrong, and tell American Gods it is a star-stealing book and should give DGHDA the stolen star. what an asshole, star-stealing book.

I love a lot of books for a lot of different reasons, I have a lot of favorite books. I love Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency even more, now, because of this situation Jennifer and I have, where we argue about two books - both of which we both love.

Jennifer and I had a very impassioned conversation about how wrong she is about her book rating system on Goodreads, how unfair it is for her to expect every book to have Gods walking among us in order to earn a high rating, how resentful I now am of American Gods, and how we are now book twins because we are both reading Water for Elephants.

one of the things I said was that our discussion of these books would eventually end:

when you realize how very very wrong you have been, and that you were perhaps too preoccupied with non-holistic detective agency things while reading it, and that you should really, really give DGHDA all the stars ever, because it is spectacular. THEN this particular discussion will be over, and we will argue about something entirely different, like… I don’t know. I’m sure we will find something else to disagree on!

and then Jennifer internet-punched me in the face.

sure, we’ve talked a lot about how harshly I judge Jennifer’s book rating system, but I feel we may need to address Jennifer’s harsh (and so very very wrong) judgment of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and also her internet chat violence.

I only got less than one day of appreciating not being punched in the face. I mean, is that REALLY too much to ask for?

…about my goodreads rating system, every few weeks, specifically about my 3 star rating of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and how IT (I) IS (am) WRONG (wrong). Here is an example of an old message (I edited out the foul language and violent content) :

by the way, I’m looking at this goodreads rating.FOUR stars for American Gods, and only THREE for Dirk Gently? American Gods doesn’t even have time travel or robots. rating: you’re doing it wrong. xoxoxoxo

This is just one of the reasons that Jules is one of my favorite people in the world. But I AM NEVER CHANGING THAT RATING. NEVER. JULES. NEVER. I do hope that Douglas Adams is, somehow, seeing this ongoing conversation and that it amuses him. I love Douglas Adams (books and his very essence) above most other things. True, I don’t remember any robots in American Gods BUT it did have time distortions and folds in the fabric of reality-or maybe even the Universe. It had road trips, the story meandered like a road trip, and it went to and discussed places that I know like The House on the Rock and it touched on truths about this weird land that is the Americas~it spoke to me~ and more specifically it spoke to me in ways that my re-reading of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency did not. While my star ratings are not an ever-fixed mark, and do sometimes change upon further reflection, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, stays 3 stars. Locked down. Bronzed. So we have something to argue about until the end of time and then all over again. ~and we will achieve immortality~

don’t hate the rater, hate the rating system.
