and we never got tired
and we never got old
we just ran…
and everything was perfect.

I’ve been talking about Earthbound so much, I thought I’d do a comic to back up all that talk. There was a cool feature in the game where you could play more after Giygas is defeated…that was kinda what I was thinking about here, just a group of friends, running around at night, celebrating, enjoying life.

You know The Great Gatsby as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel about the perils of American excess, but did you know it was also an unreleased Nintendo game? Apparently, Nintendo’s Great Gatsby was translated from a Japanese game in 1990, but never released in America.
Now, someone who lucked into buying the cartridge at a garage sale has put a playable copy online. You control Gatsby’s friend and rival Nick Carraway as you take on butlers, flappers and other ’20s-style enemies by throwing his your hat at them. Power up by grabbing a golden bowler, and restore your health with a martini!
Check out the game here. It’s a truly weird piece of lost video game history, Old Sport!

Oregon Trail: How three Minnesotans forged its path [of] one of the most popular educational games of all time

With no monitor, the original version of Oregon Trail was played by answering prompts that printed out on a roll of paper. At 10 characters per second, the teletype spat out, “How much do you want to spend on your oxen team?” or, “Do you want to eat (1) poorly (2) moderately or (3) well?” Students typed in the numerical responses, then the program chugged through a few basic formulas and spat out the next prompt along with a status update.

You died of dysentery.

gameinternals:

The ghosts are always in one of three possible modes: Chase, Scatter, or Frightened. The “normal” mode with the ghosts pursuing Pac-Man is Chase, and this is the one that they spend most of their time in. While in Chase mode, all of the ghosts use Pac-Man’s position as a factor in selecting their target tile, though it is more significant to some ghosts than others. In Scatter mode, each ghost has a fixed target tile, each of which is located just outside a different corner of the maze. This causes the four ghosts to disperse to the corners whenever they are in this mode. Frightened mode is unique because the ghosts do not have a specific target tile while in this mode. Instead, they pseudorandomly decide which turns to make at every intersection.

Fascinating!
